In an effort to modernize parliamentary proceedings, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla revealed on Tuesday that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are now being utilized to translate House proceedings into multiple regional languages for members of Parliament.

Speaking at a press conference following the two-day Commonwealth Parliamentary Association India Region meeting, Birla said that the Lok Sabha Secretariat is also aiding state and Union territory legislatures to expedite their digitization processes. The conference highlighted key issues for the upcoming 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Sydney, including LGBTQ+ participation in legislatures and the use of AI in parliamentary proceedings.

Additionally, Birla emphasized the importance of digitizing legislative bodies and training public representatives in using information technology efficiently. He also assured that concerns like financial autonomy and reduced House sittings raised by presiding officers would be addressed. According to parliament officials, AI is being used to catalogue extensive audio-visual records, enhancing accessibility to past debates and speeches. This initiative is part of a broader vision to unify legislative records under the 'one nation, one digital platform' scheme, accessible via the 'Digital Sansad' portal.
