Iran's Quds Force commander, Esmail Qaani, urged Iraqi political leaders to reduce their criticism of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani amid ongoing spying allegations. Sources revealed that Qaani made this request during a recent visit to Baghdad, underscoring Iran's concerns about regional stability.
The directive aims to prevent further weakening of Sudani's position, reflecting Tehran's effort to stabilize Iraq amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East. Iran has long maintained influence in Iraq through various armed groups and political factions and is keen to avoid extra pressure on its regional alliances.
Amid the regional violence, Qaani emphasized the need for Iraqi stability during his meetings with leaders of the Coordination Framework, a coalition of Shi'ite Muslim parties that supports Sudani. The allegations of spying have been hotly debated, and Iraq's judiciary has opened a probe into the matter. Iran's aim is clear: prevent further discord as Iraq prepares for its 2025 parliamentary elections.
