In a small village in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a panchayat chose a traditional form of justice to settle a case involving morphed obscene pictures of an 18-year-old woman. The accused, a 22-year-old relative, was punished through shoe-beating, a move the panchayat believed would protect his future by preventing police involvement.
The incident unfolded in Hardua Kifayat Ullah village, where the woman's family called for a panchayat to address the issue. According to Pragya Gangwar, the block chief of Nawabganj, the man had shared the obscene images with the woman's potential suitors, jeopardizing her marriage prospects.
Despite the gravity of the situation, the panchayat resolved to handle the matter internally. The victim's mother insisted on punishing the man before forgiveness could be granted. The panchayat agreed, and after the mother beat the accused with her shoes, it was decided that no police action would be taken to save the man's future.
