Transport Minister Simeon Brown highlights the project’s significance in improving regional transport infrastructure and supporting economic growth.

Motorists and freight traffic can now utilize a newly opened roundabout at the SH1/SH29 intersection in Piarere, marking a significant step forward for one of the Government's Roads of Regional Significance. The roundabout is set to enhance safety and reliability for over 2,500 heavy commercial vehicles and 25,000 cars that pass through this crucial transport corridor daily, according to Transport Minister Simeon Brown.

“The Government is committed to delivering infrastructure that boosts economic growth, reduces congestion, and creates a safer and more reliable transport network,” said Mr Brown.

The 60-metre-wide roundabout, part of an ongoing infrastructure project, has been under construction since January of this year. It was designed to improve safety and reduce wait times for motorists navigating through the busy Waikato region.

Although construction is still in progress, the roundabout opened today with two temporary approaches now in place, allowing vehicles to begin using the intersection more efficiently.

“SH1 and SH29 are strategically important routes for the upper North Island, and the opening of this roundabout is welcome news for both local and commercial drivers,” Brown added. “This marks a major milestone in reducing congestion at this critical pinch point."

The roundabout’s design will also play a vital role in a larger national project—a new Road of National Significance (RoNS) between Cambridge and Piarere. The Government has prioritized the construction of a four-lane upgrade of SH1 between these two locations, a key project that had been delayed by the previous administration.

"This upgrade will be a game changer for New Zealand’s transport infrastructure, enabling Kiwis and freight to move more efficiently and safely, while supporting economic growth and boosting productivity,” said Mr. Brown.

Additional upgrades around the roundabout are planned to further streamline traffic flow and accommodate future road projects aimed at reinforcing regional connections. This step is part of the Government's larger strategy to enhance New Zealand's key transport routes, ensuring they meet the growing demands of both local communities and national commerce.

The new roundabout is a crucial part of ongoing efforts to develop resilient and efficient transport solutions for the Waikato region and beyond. The final phase of construction is expected to be completed later this year.
