Israel Pounds Hezbollah Targets, Thousands Flee in Lebanon's Deadliest Day
Israel launched major airstrikes against Hezbollah targets, resulting in 492 deaths and causing mass evacuations in Lebanon's deadliest day in decades. The strikes have intensified the conflict, with Israel focusing on Hezbollah after a year-long war with Hamas. Tensions risk pulling in broader regional powers including Iran and the U.S.
On Monday, Israel launched airstrikes against over a thousand Hezbollah targets, killing 492 people and triggering mass evacuations, making it Lebanon's deadliest day in decades according to officials. The heavy cross-border exchanges of fire intensified since October, prompting Israel to urge Lebanese civilians to leave areas harboring Hezbollah's weapons.
In a video addressed to the Lebanese people, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarified that the conflict was with Hezbollah, not Lebanon's citizens, accusing the militant group of using civilians as human shields. Meanwhile, Lebanon activated 89 temporary shelters with a capacity of over 26,000 people to accommodate those fleeing the assaults.
The violence marks a significant escalation, with Israel now focusing on the northern front after nearly a year of conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Israel's recent strikes in Lebanon's south, east, and north have severely impacted Hezbollah, with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stating the attacks had neutralized tens of thousands of rockets and munitions.
