Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud on Monday asserted that judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts work with a fierce sense of independence in judicial matters, but they stand united with the government on the administrative side. Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of the new Bombay High Court complex, he lauded the Maharashtra government for expeditiously allotting land for the project.
The new complex, located in the upscale Bandra area, is a collaboration between the state and the judiciary to provide modern infrastructure for citizens. Chandrachud emphasized the importance of preserving the 150-year-old existing British-era High Court building, which will remain operational and serve as an inspiration to all.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, and senior judges attended the ceremony. Chandrachud stressed the need for a time-bound construction of the new complex while upholding the heritage of the current building. He said the collaboration with the government aims to offer modern infrastructure for citizens, not private interests. The need for modern amenities in the new building was echoed by other officials at the event.
