Ryan Routh, a 58-year-old man, has been charged with two gun crimes after he allegedly attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump near his Florida golf course. According to U.S. prosecutors, Routh wrote a letter months earlier detailing an assassination attempt and offering a bounty on Trump's life.
The incident took place on Sept. 15 when Routh was allegedly spotted with a rifle near Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach. He didn't fire any shots and was found to have a list of Trump's scheduled appearances in his car. Routh is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing where prosecutors will argue to keep him in jail until his trial.
Authorities discovered ammunition, a metal pipe, and a handwritten letter in a box handed over by a civilian witness. Routh, a convicted felon, has a history of criminal offenses and was living in Hawaii before the incident. The FBI is investigating the case as an attempted assassination ahead of the November 5 presidential election.
