The Supreme Court has stressed the urgent need to address misconceptions surrounding sexual health and promote a comprehensive understanding of sex education to reduce sexual crimes in India.

A bench including Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala pointed out that widespread misconceptions and conservative views among parents and educators lead to limited effectiveness of sex education. Justice Pardiwala noted that societal stigma results in a reluctance to discuss sexual health openly, thus creating a significant knowledge gap among adolescents.

The apex court also delivered a landmark judgment, ruling that watching and downloading child pornography are offenses under the POCSO Act, 2012. The bench emphasized that comprehensive sex education delays the onset of sexual activity and promotes safer practices, countering the misconception that it promotes promiscuity. Further, it highlighted successful programs like Jharkhand's 'Udaan' as evidence of the positive impact of thorough sex education.
