The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a warning to motorists to exercise extreme caution on icy roads due to severe snow and wet conditions reported across the country, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State. The South African Weather Service has also issued alerts for strong surface winds, severe thunderstorms in Gauteng, and snowfall affecting the Eastern Cape and other regions. In light of the hazardous weather, the RTMC advises motorists to adhere to road safety guidelines and Arrive Alive messages to minimize the risk of accidents. Motorists are urged to follow these safety tips when driving on icy roads:
Tips for Driving Safely on Icy Roads:
- Reduce speed: Slow down and leave ample space between your vehicle and the one ahead—allow at least three times more space than usual for stopping.
- Brake gently: Avoid skidding by applying the brakes slowly. If the wheels begin to lock, ease off the brake.
- Increase visibility: Keep your headlights on to enhance visibility to other drivers, and ensure your lights and windshield are clean.
- Use low gears: To maintain traction, especially when driving on hills, shift to lower gears.
- Avoid cruise control: Do not use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads to prevent loss of control.
- Be cautious on bridges and overpasses: These areas freeze faster and may still be icy even when temperatures are slightly above freezing.
- Stay behind snow plows: Avoid passing snow plows and sanding trucks as the roads in front of them may be more dangerous.
- Don’t overestimate your vehicle: Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can face challenges on icy roads.
The RTMC emphasizes the importance of staying vigilant during these harsh weather conditions, as even experienced drivers and well-equipped vehicles are vulnerable to hazards on icy roads. Motorists are also encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and plan accordingly.
