Civilian Casualties and Evacuations: Ukraine's Incursion into Russia's Kursk Region

At least 56 civilians have been killed and 266 wounded during Ukraine's seven-week-old incursion into Russia's western Kursk region, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday.

The cross-border attack, which began on August 6, comes over two years after Moscow deployed troops in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces are currently operating within the Kursk region. Initial reports had set the death toll at 31 up to September 5, a figure now adjusted to reflect casualties up to September 20.

Approximately 131,000 civilians have evacuated the most dangerous areas, with Kyiv accused of detaining civilians against their will, including 70-120 individuals in Sudzha. Ukraine has not commented on these claims. The conflict has been marked by denials from both sides regarding civilian targeting. Kyiv asserts its incursion aims to prevent a Russian cross-border attack while accusing Russia of bombings in Kursk and inviting UN and Red Cross observers to the region.
