The body of an unidentified youth was retrieved from a pond in a village here on Monday, two days after locals witnessed the youth drowning, officials reported.

Residents claimed the body had been floating in the pond in Asaipur village in the Gauriganj police station area since September 21, pointing to alleged negligence by the police and local administration.

Following an alert on September 21 about a youth drowning, police, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been scouring the site. Amethi police confirmed these efforts through a post on X.

Local police station in-charge Shyam Narayan Pandey confirmed that the body of the 28-year-old youth was finally pulled from the pond.

Municipal Councillor Ram Raj Tiwari of Ward No. 15 in Gauriganj said the youth fell into the pond on September 21, and despite villagers' rescue attempts, the deep waters thwarted their efforts. Tiwari asserted that the incident was reported, but no immediate action was taken.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, police confirmed.
