In a significant move, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has mandated a judicial inquiry into the purported torture of an army officer and the sexual assault of his fiancée at a Bharatpur police station.
An official notification revealed that a commission of inquiry will be helmed by Justice Chittaranjan Dash, a retired high court judge, to delve into the incident's chronology and the accountability of those involved.
The commission, bound to submit its report within 60 days, is expected to propose strategies to avert such occurrences and ensure women's safety. An investigation by the state Crime Branch is also under the scrutiny of the Orissa High Court. Meanwhile, the Odisha government has suspended five policemen involved in the episode.
