The body of a premature baby has been discovered near the banks of a lake in Thane city, Maharashtra, according to police reports on Monday.

Passersby identified the body of the male child near Siddheswar Talao on Saturday and immediately informed the authorities.

Upon receiving the alert, police rushed to the location and transferred the body to a government hospital for postmortem analysis, stated an official from Naupada police station.

The baby was found to be apparently stillborn, prematurely in the eighth month of pregnancy, the official added.

An FIR was filed against an unknown individual on Sunday under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 94 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body).

Authorities are currently reviewing local hospitals to identify the baby's parents, the official said.
