Israel is considering implementing siege tactics against Hamas in northern Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly stated on Sunday, according to several Israeli media outlets.
The plan, developed by retired military commanders and discussed in parliament, calls for Palestinian civilians to evacuate northern Gaza, which would then be declared a closed military zone. Approximately 5,000 Hamas militants would be besieged until they surrender. Army Radio reported Netanyahu discussed this at a parliamentary committee meeting.
Public broadcaster Kan quoted Netanyahu saying the blueprint 'makes sense' and is one of multiple plans under consideration. Israel faces international criticism for the humanitarian crisis caused by its year-long offensive against Hamas.
Most Gazans are displaced, with many crowded into a small humanitarian zone lacking essential services, per the United Nations. Northern Gaza, home to hundreds of thousands, has limited humanitarian access.
The conflict began on Oct 7 when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking 250 hostage. In retaliation, Israel's offensive has reportedly killed over 41,000 Palestinians, many civilians, while losing 346 soldiers in the conflict.
