An industrialist was duped of Rs 1.01 crore by fraudsters, the police reported on Sunday.
Rajnish Ahuja, a resident of Sarabha Nagar and owner of an auto parts manufacturing unit, received a WhatsApp call from someone claiming to be a Delhi airport official, police stated.
Ahuja was informed that a package containing 16 passports and 58 ATM cards, allegedly sent by him, was seized at the Delhi international airport. The caller introduced another suspect, Sanjay Singh, who purportedly confessed that Rs 38 crore extorted from someone had been deposited in Ahuja's bank account, according to the police.
When Ahuja denied sending any package, he was told his ID might have been misused, and the case was being transferred to the Delhi Police. Subsequently, Ahuja got a call from someone identifying himself as Sunil Kumar from Delhi Police, who claimed that an arrest warrant had been issued for Ahuja.
Intimidated by a fake arrest warrant sent to him, Ahuja transferred Rs 86 lakh and Rs 15 lakh to bank accounts provided by the fraudsters, as per the police.
Later, Ahuja received another call from a supposed CBI official, assuring him that he was found innocent and the money would be returned, which never happened, police confirmed.
Following Ahuja's complaint, the cyber police have seized the bank accounts involved and launched an investigation.
