Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma on Sunday made a compassionate visit to Sergeant Debasish Chakraborty, who sustained injuries during a violent protest march on August 27. The march was organized by a citizen's group protesting the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Chakraborty, who suffered an eye injury due to alleged brick batting near Eden Gardens, is currently recuperating at his residence in Howrah. Verma, addressing the media post-visit, stated, 'He is recovering, I spoke to Debasish and his family.'
The Commissioner also noted that while Chakraborty's recovery is on the right track, it will be some time before he can return to active duty. Verma took over as Kolkata Police Commissioner on September 17 after the replacement of Vineet Goyal, a move that addressed one of the key demands of junior doctors seeking justice for the slain medic.
