Congress MP A Bimol Akoijam has lambasted the Centre over its handling of the ongoing crisis in Manipur, questioning what he describes as ''inaction'' from the central government. In an interview with PTI Videos, Akoijam posed pointed questions about why the northeastern state has been allowed to deteriorate to a state akin to a 'banana republic,' reminiscent of Afghanistan.
Akoijam noted that with 60,000 troops stationed in Manipur, the central government should have been able to prevent the situation from persisting. He further questioned whether such a crisis would have been tolerated in states like Uttar Pradesh or Bihar.
Citing examples of ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2022, he emphasized the need for the government to address the state's complex issues decisively. Akoijam also criticized what he termed as inconsistent statements from Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and urged the central government to assert its authority more effectively.
