Beirut Airstrike Escalates Tensions: Civilian Death Toll Rises
Rescue workers in Beirut are searching for survivors after an Israeli airstrike targeting Hezbollah commanders killed at least 37 people in a suburb. Cross-border strikes have continued, escalating tensions and leading to increased casualties. Both sides are bracing for further conflict amid international calls for a ceasefire.
Rescue workers in Beirut continued their search on Saturday for people still missing in the rubble after an Israeli airstrike targeted Hezbollah commanders, resulting in at least 37 deaths in a suburb of the Lebanese capital, according to officials. Hezbollah, supported by Iran, confirmed that 16 members including senior leader Ibrahim Aqil were among the victims.
According to the Israeli military, the strike aimed at an underground meeting of Aqil and elite Hezbollah commanders, dismantling their military structure. The explosion demolished a multi-story residential building and damaged a nearby nursery, with Lebanon's health ministry reporting fatalities including three children and seven women.
Cross-border strikes intensified with Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah's rocket attacks on northern Israel. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with calls for a ceasefire amid fears of further escalation. U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan acknowledged the risks but advocated for a diplomatic resolution.
