United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is 'gravely alarmed' by reports of a full-scale assault on the Sudanese city of al-Fashir and has called on the leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to immediately halt the attack, according to a U.N. spokesperson on Saturday.
Guterres warned that any further escalation of violence threatens to widen the conflict along intercommunal lines throughout Sudan's Darfur region. 'Immediate action is required to prevent a catastrophe,' the spokesperson added in a statement.
The situation in Sudan continues to be monitored closely by international and humanitarian organizations, with calls for restraint and dialogue gaining urgency.
