Nine members of a jeweller family in Rajkot, Gujarat, attempted suicide by consuming pesticide due to severe financial distress, police confirmed on Saturday. The family, residents of the Gundawadi locality, called for an ambulance following the failed attempt on Friday night and were subsequently hospitalized. An official reported that all members are currently in stable condition.

The drastic action was driven by the failure of two Mumbai-based businessmen to pay for 3 kg of gold jewellery worth approximately Rs 1.95 crore, supplied last year, according to Inspector Mayurdhwaj Sarvaiya of the Bhaktinagar police station. Among those who consumed the pesticide were an eight-year-old child and a 67-year-old woman.

Ketan Adesara, who co-owns a jewellery unit with his brother, revealed to reporters that the family was promised payment for the jewellery by Diwali 2023. The non-payment has hampered their ability to meet loan instalments, he explained. Inspector Sarvaiya stated that a case of cheating will be registered against the businessmen, while the police have also made a diary entry regarding the suicide attempt at the Bhaktinagar police station.
