The Indian Army has formalized a partnership with Tiranga Mountain Rescue (TMR) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) in Delhi Cantt. The signing took place in the presence of General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff. Major General Manish Luthra, Additional Director General Military Operations (A), represented the Army, while Mr. Hemant Sachdev, a noted mountaineer and Mt. Everest summiteer, signed on behalf of TMR.
This collaboration aims to enhance the Indian Army’s capabilities in rescue and survival operations in mountainous regions. Under the MoU, TMR will provide customized training programs for Army instructors, focusing on avalanche rescue and survival skills.
General Upendra Dwivedi praised TMR’s dedication and the significance of the partnership, recognizing their contributions by awarding Chief of Army Staff Commendation Cards to two members of TMR’s Rescue Team.
Lieutenant General Tarun Kumar Aich, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy), characterized the MoU as mutually beneficial. He noted that for the past nine years, TMR has played a vital role in saving lives through training and rescue initiatives. Mr. Sachdev highlighted that 15 TMR teams are currently deployed alongside the Indian Army, successfully rescuing many individuals in avalanche-prone areas.
This latest agreement builds on a prior arrangement established in 2016 with Northern Command, which focused on avalanche and rescue support. Additional agreements with Eastern and Central Commands in 2021 and 2024 have further expanded this collaboration. The new MoU aims to leverage TMR’s expertise to enhance the Army’s effectiveness in challenging rescue operations.
The partnership reflects a commitment to improving the readiness of personnel operating in mountainous terrains, enhancing training standards, and strengthening rescue operations in high-altitude environments.
