New Georgia Law on 'Family Values' Raises Serious Human Rights Concerns

The legislation targets public discussions, education, and gatherings related to sexual orientation and gender identity, reinforcing harmful stereotypes about LGBTIQ+ individuals.

A recently adopted law in Georgia on "family values and protection of minors" has sparked widespread concern due to its potential violations of numerous human rights. The law imposes discriminatory restrictions affecting the rights to equality, non-discrimination, education, health, freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, privacy, and security.

The legislation targets public discussions, education, and gatherings related to sexual orientation and gender identity, reinforcing harmful stereotypes about LGBTIQ+ individuals. One of its most controversial aspects is the false equivalence it draws between consensual same-sex relationships and incest. The law also prohibits the legal recognition of same-sex couples and transgender individuals, severely limiting their access to healthcare and impeding efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in the country.

Human rights advocates fear that the law could fuel hate speech, increase violence against LGBTIQ+ communities, and perpetuate stigma and intolerance. They are calling on the Georgian Parliament and authorities to rescind the law and bring the country's legislation in line with international human rights obligations.
