The National Green Tribunal has levied a Rs 50,000 fine on the state of Jharkhand for its failure to assist in proceedings concerning the prevention and control of pollution in the Ganga.

A special bench, chaired by Justice Prakash Shrivastava, criticized Jharkhand's counsel for being unprepared and noted the absence of any competent authority.

Previously, the tribunal had fined Jharkhand Rs 25,000 due to non-compliance by district magistrates with reporting duties. The Ganga flows through the Sahibganj, Bokaro, Dhanbad, and Ramgarh districts in Jharkhand.
