In a major setback for law enforcement, the CBI on Saturday filed charges of evidence tampering against Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who is currently in judicial custody for corruption.

In a related development, the CBI arrested Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge of Tala Police Station, for his alleged participation in the rape and murder of a woman medic at the same hospital. The hospital falls under his police station's purview.

The central agency has sought Ghosh's remand from the court, which has now instructed jail authorities to present him for CBI custody. To date, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the medic's rape and murder case.
