In a major development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday filed rape and murder charges against Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Ghosh, already in judicial custody for a corruption case, faces severe new allegations, according to officials.
Additionally, the CBI arrested Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge of Tala Police Station. Mondal is accused of being involved in the rape and murder of an on-duty woman medic at RG Kar Hospital—an institution under his jurisdiction. The central agency had requested a court to remand Ghosh into CBI custody, and jail authorities have been ordered to comply.
The tragic incident took a gruesome turn on August 9 when the semi-nude body of a woman postgraduate trainee was found in the hospital's seminar hall. Mondal's arrest followed after hours of questioning by CBI officers, during which he failed to provide satisfactory responses. He faces charges including destruction of evidence and delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR).
