The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a comprehensive report on the state of its cow shelters. The court issued the order on Friday in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Archana Singh Tomar.
During the hearing, the Lucknow bench pressed the state's animal husbandry department to explain the expenditure of Rs 30 per day per cattle for their upkeep. The court has also summoned the department's director for the next hearing, scheduled for September 25, to answer questions via video conferencing. The justices, Rajan Roy and Om Prakash Shukla, inquired about the actual feed provided at these shelters.
The court further demanded an assessment of village pastures to confirm their current status. A lawyer representing the state government disclosed that Uttar Pradesh operates 605 cow shelters. Additionally, the court sought operational details about specific shelters managed by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation.
