Protest Erupts Over Police Mishandling in Kolkata

Leaders and supporters of the CPI(M)-led Left Front staged a protest near Kolkata Police headquarters, demanding the resignation of Commissioner Vineet Goyal for alleged mishandling of a rape and murder case. Leaders and supporters of the CPI(M)-led Left Front camped near the Kolkata Police headquarters on Friday evening, demanding the resignation of Commissioner Vineet Goyal. They allege mishandling of the investigation into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar hospital on August 9.

The 'Lalbazar Abhijan' protest, led by the CPI(M), was halted near the police headquarters by an eight-foot tall steel barricade, set up to prevent further movement due to prohibitory orders. CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim vowed that protesters would hold peaceful demonstrations overnight.

Salim criticized the handling of the RG Kar case, stating that unless Goyal steps down, protests will persist. Leaders, including veteran CPI(M) figure Biman Bose, addressed the crowd, demanding CBI interrogation for Goyal. A heavy police presence remains in the area.
