Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that slogans shouted by evictees in Kochutoli village during a forced eviction mirrored those used by protesters in Bangladesh, which led to violent clashes.
Sarma noted that the eviction, aimed at clearing illegal settlements in a tribal area, had faced severe resistance, with villagers, including women and children, using sharp weapons and sticks to attack officials and police.
The violence resulted in the police opening fire, causing fatalities and injuries. Sarma alleged that political opposition was instigating the settlers, adding complexity to the ongoing clearing efforts.
The controversy deepened when the Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, accused Sarma of violating court orders by not issuing proper eviction notices. Police alleged a conspiracy behind the attacks and detained several individuals for interrogation.
