Centre Extends Deadline for Manipur Violence Inquiry Commission

The Centre has extended the deadline for the Commission of Inquiry, headed by former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ajai Lamba, to deliver its report on the Manipur violence. The commission will now submit its findings by November 20, 2024.

Initially set up on June 3, 2023, the commission also includes retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar. The panel has been tasked with investigating the May 3, 2023, violence that has claimed over 220 lives and rendered thousands homeless.

The inquiry will delve into the causes and spread of the violence, examining whether there were any lapses by authorities and the adequacy of measures taken to prevent the violence. Complaints from individuals and associations will also be reviewed.
