Historic German Navy Transit Through Taiwan Strait: A Display of Western Unity
Germany's navy, including frigate 'Baden-Württemberg' and supply ship 'Frankfurt am Main', navigated through the Taiwan Strait for the first time in two decades, signaling Berlin's alignment with Western allies amid heightened tensions between Taiwan and China. This act underscores the international debate about sovereignty and navigational rights in the strait.
Germany's frigate 'Baden-Württemberg' and supply ship 'Frankfurt am Main' sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Friday, marking the first such passage in over twenty years and signifying Berlin's commitment to supporting Western allies amidst escalating tensions between Taipei and Beijing.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, speaking from Berlin, confirmed the transit, underscoring that international waters offer the most efficient and safest route. Taiwan's Defence Ministry reported that the passage was monitored and proceeded without incident, describing it as 'normal'.
Ahead of the transit confirmation, China reiterated its claim over the strait, condemning any moves as provocations. Germany, however, emphasized its right to free navigation as per international maritime law, reflecting a broader commitment to upholding international rules.
