Diplomatic Tensions Escalate: Russia Expels UK Diplomats
Russia has revoked the accreditation of six British diplomats over allegations of espionage and sabotage. This move is seen as a retaliatory measure against the UK's earlier expulsion of Russian diplomats and the removal of diplomatic status from several Russian properties. The timing aligns with high-stakes talks in Washington concerning Ukraine's use of long-range missiles against Russia.

Russia's FSB security service has revoked the accreditation of six British diplomats in Moscow, accusing them of espionage and sabotage. This action highlights the Kremlin's displeasure with the UK's role in supporting Ukraine. Britain has dismissed these allegations as 'completely baseless,' calling it tit-for-tat after the UK expelled the Russian defense attache and removed diplomatic status from various Russian properties in May.
Hours before crucial talks in Washington between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and U.S. President Joe Biden, Russia announced the expulsions. These talks are pivotal for Kyiv to get the green light to use long-range missiles against Russian targets. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that allowing Ukraine to strike Russian territory with Western-made long-range missiles would fundamentally change the conflict.
The FSB cited documents suggesting a British foreign office department was intensifying the political and military situation against Russia. Consequently, Russia has terminated the accreditation of six British political department members, claiming their actions threatened Russian security. Britain, however, has labeled these claims as unsubstantiated.
