The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has expressed profound sadness at the passing of former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, fondly known as “PG.” Gordhan passed away in the early hours of Friday morning at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer, his family announced.

In a statement, SARS described Gordhan as a "true patriot, social activist, and steward leader" whose contributions to the nation and its revenue system will be remembered for generations. Joining President Cyril Ramaphosa and many others in mourning, SARS paid tribute to his remarkable legacy as both a leader and visionary.

Gordhan served as the Commissioner of SARS from 1999 to 2009 before taking on the role of Finance Minister. During his tenure at SARS, he revolutionized the institution, championing reforms that transformed it into a globally respected revenue service. SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter credited Gordhan with conceptualizing and laying the foundation for a modern tax and customs administration, noting that his vision and leadership continue to inspire the organization.

“PG was the one who ushered in the notion that SARS exists to serve a Higher Purpose of enabling government to build a capable democratic state that fosters sustainable economic growth and social development,” said SARS in its statement. Gordhan’s unyielding dedication to integrity and good governance marked his tenure, ensuring SARS became a pillar of strength for South Africa’s fiscal health.

Beyond his work at SARS, Gordhan served the country in numerous leadership roles, including Minister of Finance, Minister of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs, and Minister of Public Enterprises. His courage and vision helped guide South Africa through challenging periods, including the battle against state capture.

SARS also remembered Gordhan as a committed social activist who dedicated his life to the struggle for justice and equality, both during apartheid and in democratic South Africa. His courage in confronting the steely grips of state capture was particularly noted, with Kieswetter recalling Gordhan’s fearless stance in the face of adversity, even at great personal cost to him and his family.

“His legacy will continue to guide SARS and South Africa in its pursuit of ethical governance and economic justice,” the revenue service said, adding that Gordhan’s lifelong revolutionary spirit and unwavering commitment to public service will serve as an inspiration for future generations.

SARS extended its deepest condolences to Gordhan’s wife, Vanitha, his daughters, Anisha and Priyesha, and his extended family and friends. The institution paid tribute to his visionary leadership, saying he touched the lives of many with his dedicated service to the country.
