A 27-year-old alleged Islamic extremist has been arrested in Munich for planning an attack on German soldiers, aimed at causing mass casualties and widespread fear, authorities revealed on Friday.

The Syrian suspect, believed to support radical Islamic ideology, acquired two 40-centimeter-long machetes earlier this month and intended to use them in the attack, as reported by the Munich public prosecutor's office.

Following his arrest on Thursday, the suspect was brought before a judge on Friday. His identity remains undisclosed due to German privacy regulations.

This incident follows a deadly attack on August 23 in Solingen, which left three dead and eight injured. The attacker, a Syrian asylum-seeker, was previously scheduled for deportation. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility but offered no proof. The violence has led to increased security measures and sparked political debate on immigration, with the German interior ministry extending border controls.
