A pro-Israel rally in Newton, a suburb of Boston, erupted into violence on Thursday evening when a passerby was shot during a confrontation with demonstrators, according to authorities.
Police were alerted at 6:40 p.m. to the small rally. Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan stated that a passerby engaged in a heated exchange with the demonstrators before running across the street and tackling one of them. A scuffle ensued, and the passerby was shot by a member of the rally.
Scott Hayes, 47, from Framingham, has been arrested on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and violating a constitutional right causing injury. He is scheduled for arraignment in district court on Friday. The shooting victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, is being treated for life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. Newton officials are urging witnesses to come forward with any photos or videos of the incident.
