A Moldovan serviceman was fatally wounded near the demarcation line of the separatist Transdniestria region on Thursday. The rare incident occurred over 30 years after a war between the two sides.
According to a defence ministry statement, the serviceman was "fatally wounded...as a result of a shot from the weapon in his possession while performing his duties at his post". Police and forensic experts are currently conducting investigations.
Moldovan and Transdniestria contingents, alongside Russian peacekeepers, have been stationed on the de facto border since a brief conflict in 1992 following the collapse of Soviet rule. While Moldova aims to reincorporate Transdniestria, such incidents are extremely rare, with the last death of a serviceman occurring in 2022.
