Resolution Pushes ERs to Provide Emergency Abortions Despite State Bans

Congressional Democrats have introduced a resolution to mandate emergency rooms in providing emergency abortions when a woman's health or life is at risk, despite state bans. They cited a report revealing over 100 pregnant women were denied care since 2022. The resolution faces minimal chances of passing a Republican-controlled House.

Congressional Democrats have put forward a resolution to ensure that U.S. emergency rooms provide emergency abortions when a woman's health or life is at risk, irrespective of strict state abortion bans. This move follows an Associated Press report that uncovered more than 100 instances where pregnant women were denied care since 2022.

"It's an outrage," said Rep. Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat from New Jersey who introduced the House resolution. She emphasized the risks to lives despite federal law and guidance from the Biden administration. Democratic Senator Patty Murray of Washington announced plans to introduce a Senate version next week.

Federal law mandates stabilizing treatment for medical emergencies in emergency rooms. However, since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the national right to an abortion, states like Texas, Idaho, and Florida have seen heightened confusion and conflict. Reports highlighted severe cases where women with emergency conditions were sent home without treatment.
