A suspect in a shooting at an apartment complex near Denver was taken into custody Thursday and transported to a hospital along with a female victim after a four-hour standoff that saw gunfire damaging cars, buildings, and apartment units, according to police.

Officers negotiated with the suspect for 3 1/2 hours before they forced their way into the apartment at the Arista Flats complex in Broomfield, where the man was holding a woman hostage, said Rachel Haslett, a spokesperson for the Broomfield police department. An officer fired his weapon inside the apartment, but Haslett did not confirm if anyone was hit.

"He was threatening to hurt people," Haslett said, without disclosing the suspect's name, age, or the weapons he may have used. Both the suspect and female victim were taken to a hospital; the severity of their injuries remains unknown. Residents were urged to take shelter or evacuate via a phone alert, and eyewitness accounts described sporadic gunfire exchanges throughout the standoff.
