The South African government is committed to pursuing a new nuclear build strategy that will be driven by scientific evidence, according to Minister of Energy and Electricity, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. Speaking at a Nuclear Seminar hosted by the Ministry, Ramokgopa emphasized the importance of basing nuclear policy decisions on science to avoid emotional and uninformed reactions to the topic.

Ramokgopa stressed that the government's decision to temporarily withdraw the ministerial determination for the procurement of at least 2,500MW of nuclear energy was a precautionary move aimed at ensuring the integrity of the process. He explained that this was necessary to prevent legal challenges and to ensure that decisions are based on clear, transparent scientific evidence.

“We made the point that we have nothing to hide,” the Minister said, adding that the process would be made as democratic as possible, allowing room for objections to be raised based on scientific grounds.

Ramokgopa also highlighted the growing global recognition of nuclear energy as an essential part of the future energy mix. He described this shift as a "return to realism," pointing out that nuclear energy is vital for achieving energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring energy sovereignty in South Africa. The Minister acknowledged that while nuclear energy is necessary, decisions on its scale and pace must be balanced with affordability and fiscal responsibility.

“Nuclear is part of the energy mix,” he said, affirming its role in the country’s long-term energy strategy.
