Turkey has launched an investigation into the death of Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, believed to have been shot by Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank. Ankara announced on Thursday its intention to request international arrest warrants related to the case.
The body of Eygi, 26, is expected to arrive in Turkey on Friday, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry. Eygi was killed during a protest against Jewish settlement expansion in the West Bank last Friday. The Turkish Foreign Ministry stated that she "was deliberately targeted and killed by Israeli soldiers during a peaceful demonstration in solidarity with Palestinians." Israel, accepting responsibility, stated that her death was unintentional but likely caused by its troops.
A high-ranking Turkish official disclosed that Eygi's body would be flown from Tel Aviv to Baku on Thursday night, arriving in Istanbul on Friday morning for burial in Didim, a western Turkish city. Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc indicated the Ankara chief prosecutor's office is investigating those responsible for Eygi's death. U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris condemned the killing, urging Israel to prevent similar incidents in the future.
