Pope Francis Calls for Fair Wages for Migrant Workers in Singapore

Pope Francis on Thursday urged political leaders in Singapore, a leading global financial hub, to ensure fair wages for the country's million-plus lower-paid foreign workers. This significant address, part of his ambitious 12-day tour across Southeast Asia and Oceania, spotlighted Singapore's ageing population and its crucial migrant workforce in construction and domestic services.

Addressing about 1,000 political, civil, and religious leaders, the pope emphasized, "Special attention must be paid to the poor and the elderly, as well as to the dignity of migrant workers." He underscored that these workers contribute immensely to society and deserve fair remuneration.

Government data shows that as of December 2023, Singapore had 1.1 million foreign workers earning less than S$3,000 per month, predominantly from nearby countries like Malaysia, China, Bangladesh, and the Philippines. NGOs such as the Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics welcomed the pope's remarks, aligning with his call for fair wages. The workforce ministry has not yet responded to the pope's comments.
