As South Africa marks Tourism Month in September, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Deputy Mayor Babalwa Lobishe has emphasized the importance of peace and safety in boosting the tourism sector. Speaking at an event celebrating Tourism Month, Lobishe called for collaboration among stakeholders to create a secure and welcoming environment for both domestic and international tourists.

Tourism Month, observed annually in September, promotes domestic travel and showcases the nation's diverse tourism offerings. This year's celebrations are themed "Tourism and Peace—30 Years of Connecting People and Cultures," underscoring the sector's role in fostering unity and cultural exchange.

Lobishe highlighted that the metro's focus this year extends beyond tourism safety to the diversification of tourism products, offering tourists memorable experiences. She also reflected on South Africa's past, noting that peace and safety were once privileges for a few, and emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive environment where everyone can explore and enjoy the country.

To ensure a successful Tourism Month, the Nelson Mandela Bay metro has engaged key stakeholders, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), private security, and the Eastern Cape Tourism Board, to enhance safety and security measures.

Lobishe pointed out the metro's success in delivering cultural experiences, which distinguish it from other destinations. She also highlighted the growth of the cruise industry, noting that the metro welcomed 36 cruise vessels last year, contributing an estimated R77 million to the local economy. This year, the metro expects 40 cruise vessels and aims to increase the duration of their stays to generate more jobs and economic opportunities.

In line with the metro's commitment to tourism safety, Shuling Lindoor, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Tourism, and Agriculture, announced the recruitment of additional tourism ambassadors to work with the security cluster. These ambassadors will play a key role in ensuring that tourists feel safe, which is essential for a positive and memorable experience.

As part of the Tourism Month festivities, the metro will host several major events, including a National Cruise Liner Workshop from 26-27 September, the Green Flag Trials to promote sustainable tourism on 28 September, and the Kasi Food Festival in Zwide Township on 28-29 September, celebrating local cuisine and township tourism.

The month will conclude with a grand finale at the Mendi Arts Centre, featuring an interactive retelling of the story of New Brighton. In addition, the metro will collaborate with various entities to deliver a diverse lineup of events, including Tourism Awards, Premier Soccer League games, and cultural celebrations.

The municipality aims to ensure that Nelson Mandela Bay remains a top destination by continuously improving its tourism offerings and safety measures.
