Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday for an official visit aimed at bolstering ties with Iraq, a key ally of both Tehran and Washington. According to Iran's state media, this marks Pezeshkian's first official foreign trip.
The visit aims to strengthen the relationship between Iran and Iraq, home to several Iran-aligned parties and militias. Pezeshkian's agenda includes signing multiple agreements and meeting senior Iraqi officials. Iraq, hosting 2,500 U.S. troops, has experienced escalating attacks since the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted in Gaza.
Pezeshkian will also visit Iraqi Kurdistan, a region where Iran has previously launched strikes. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi highlighted multiple areas of cooperation, covering political, regional, and security issues, ahead of the president's trip.
