For the first time, Chinese troops are participating in annual military exercises held by Brazil's armed forces, training alongside U.S. soldiers, the Brazilian Navy announced this week. Last year, China only sent observers for the event.
China's inclusion in this year's Operation Formosa is notable as both Chinese and U.S. troops will be training together. While the contingent sizes for both nations were not disclosed, the Brazilian military will deploy 3,000 troops utilizing aircraft, tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery over a three-day period starting Wednesday.
Taking place in Formosa, 80 km northeast of Brasilia, the exercises involve live ammunition and are aimed at fostering international military cooperation. Military personnel from eight countries, including Argentina, France, Italy, and Pakistan, will also participate as observers.
