Kanpur narrowly avoided tragedy when a vigilant loco pilot halted the Bhiwani-Prayagraj Express after it collided with an LPG cylinder placed on the tracks on Sunday night. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has joined local authorities in probing the incident, suspecting sabotage.

Police discovered bottles of petrol and matchboxes at the scene, implications that led to the involvement of a high-level NIA team. The investigation is being spearheaded by a female IPS officer from the 2012 batch. The NIA is currently gathering details and surveying the area around the railway tracks.

ADG Railways has also arrived in Kanpur to assist in the investigation. The Kanpur Police have detained six individuals, including two local history-sheeters. A Special Investigation Team has been formed to scrutinize potential links to a recent Sabarmati Express derailment. An FIR has been registered under provisions of the Explosives Act and Railways Act, implicating the suspects in an intentional sabotage attempt.
