Former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara has fulfilled the Supreme Court's mandate to compensate victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks with a payment of 75 million rupees, court officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Jayasundara, alongside former President Maithripala Sirisena and other senior defense officials, was held accountable for negligence that enabled the deadly suicide bombings, which killed over 270 people, including foreigners.
The Supreme Court bench ruled that the defense establishment's failure to act on prior intelligence allowed the attacks by local jihadi group NTJ, linked to ISIS, to occur. All payments were ordered to be completed by August 30 to avoid contempt of court charges.
