US and China Seek Military Stability Amid Rising Tensions

The United States and China held inaugural theatre-level commander talks on Tuesday, as both nations aim to stabilize military ties and avoid misunderstandings, according to Chinese authorities.

With relations at a historic low following the US downing of a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon, Admiral Sam Paparo of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command connected via video call with his counterpart Wu Yanan of the PLA's Southern Theater Command. Paparo urged the PLA to reconsider its coercive tactics in the South China Sea.

This conversation builds on an agreement from a prior meeting in Beijing between U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and a top Chinese military adviser. The Indo-Pacific Command oversees hotspots like the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait, crucial areas for U.S.-China military dynamics.
