At the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) High-Level Meeting held in Beijing on September 5, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo underscored the vital importance of China-Africa collaboration in the areas of industrialization, agricultural modernization, and green development. The summit, co-chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, highlighted these three pillars as crucial for Africa’s modernization and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In his address, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that Africa is at a crucial juncture, facing rapid technological and economic changes alongside pressing environmental challenges. He identified industrialization as a fundamental driver of economic growth, diversification, and job creation. Drawing from Ghana’s experience, he showcased the “One-District-One-Factory” (1D1F) initiative as a successful example of targeted industrial policies. Since its inception, the 1D1F program has established 321 factories, created 170,000 jobs, and attracted significant domestic and foreign investment.
President Akufo-Addo also spotlighted agricultural modernization, referencing Ghana’s “Planting for Food and Jobs” programme. This initiative has introduced advanced farming techniques and machinery, enhancing productivity and improving farmers' livelihoods across the nation.
On the topic of green development, President Akufo-Addo stressed that sustainable practices are essential for future growth. He detailed Ghana’s efforts in promoting renewable energy, combating deforestation, and managing waste sustainably. The country’s development policies are designed to incorporate environmental considerations, ensuring long-term sustainability.
Acknowledging China’s achievements in industrialization, agricultural transformation, and green development, President Akufo-Addo praised these efforts as valuable lessons for Ghana and the broader African continent. He emphasized the importance of the Beijing Action Plan (2025-2027), which aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN’s SDGs, in advancing further cooperation.
In his closing remarks, President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to advancing industrialization, agricultural modernization, and green development. He called for enhanced partnerships with China and other nations to build a future of shared prosperity and sustainability for all.
