Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has indicated that evidence against jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan may result in a military trial regarding the violence on May 9, 2023, according to a media report on Sunday.
Speaking during a televised interview, Asif emphasized that military trials have precedent and will continue as necessary. He highlighted accusations against Khan made by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), asserting significant involvement in orchestrating the May 9 violence where PTI supporters damaged military installations.
Khan's legal team filed a petition to the Islamabad High Court seeking to prevent a military trial, raising objections about due process. However, the Supreme Court had temporarily suspended its earlier order invalidating civilian trials in military courts, making the final decision crucial.
