Fadnavis Urges Dropping Harsh Recruitment Criteria
Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis has requested the BMC to remove the requirement for candidates to clear Class 10 and graduation exams on the first attempt. With 2,000 vacancies open, the civic body's extensive eligibility criteria have drawn criticism. Fadnavis addressed this issue in a letter to the BMC commissioner.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday urged the Mumbai municipal commissioner to eliminate the recruitment condition requiring candidates to clear Class 10 and graduation exams in their first attempt. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India's wealthiest civic body, plans to fill 2,000 vacancies soon.
The BMC faces backlash over its extensive eligibility criteria.
''One of the conditions requires candidates to pass the 10th and graduation exams in their first attempt. Some outstanding students, due to family-related or unavoidable reasons, cannot meet this criterion,'' Fadnavis wrote in a letter to BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
''Such conditions are seen as unfair and should be removed from the recruitment process,'' the letter added.
Significantly, Fadnavis posted the letter on X (formerly Twitter). The BMC is currently under an administrator as civic body elections have been overdue for over two years.
