In a noteworthy turn of events, a prison inmate in Uttar Pradesh's Farrukhabad has amassed Rs 1.04 lakh in remuneration, all due to his efforts in assisting fellow prisoners with legal counsel and letter drafting. Kuldeep Singh, imprisoned since 2017 for a murder conviction, has now become a 'lakhpati' in jail.
Prison officials report that Singh received this substantial amount from the Legal Services Authority. Equipped with a graduate degree, Singh was appointed as a prisoner's assistant by Jail Superintendent Bhimsain Mukund and impressed officials with his dedication. Assigned as a para-legal volunteer at the jail's Legal Aid Clinic in May 2022, Singh's commitment to assisting other inmates did not go unnoticed.
Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, stated that Singh's recent payment was transferred to his bank account, making it the highest remuneration ever awarded to an inmate for legal service work. This achievement has inspired other prisoners to work diligently in similar capacities.
